Hello Gang.

I'm selling my 91 Volkswagen Gti, And have been doing some extensive research on what car I should buy next. The GTI is only being sold due to me having a 14 month old boy and I need more doors, back seat and creature comforts. After a week of reading reviews, watching video, and mulling over various forums I had decided a Mazdaspeed Protege would meet my expectations as a kid hauler and weekend autox/track toy. Delving deeper into forums I started reading HORROR stories about the MazdaSpeed protege and have started second guessing myself. Is this car reliable enough to cruise around with my son in the car during the week without me fearing being stranded on the side of the road?

Another car I'm considering is a MK5 Gti i'm a huge Volkswagen fanboy icon_lol Would this better suite me? Or is the Mazdaspeed the total package it seems to be?

Welcome to the forum.

The MSP's are pretty much 50/50.  If you need a kid hauler.. get a MS3 instead.

I agree. It is a great family car that just happens to be fun to drive. It also has plenty of options to upgrade if your heart desires.  icon_thumright

Previous owner is going to say A LOT!  Pay close attention to the car.  If the springs are chopped or there is an Autozone air filter on it - stay away!

Look carefully, you'll find one.

^^^^^

Looks like pure win!  It's on the upper end of the MSP price scale, but well worth it (if owner's claims are true).  Plus I love that color.

Ive never even had a ride in one of these cars. I'm going to have to drive a few of them, I'm also interested in the mp3 sound like its a little low on power but I'm used to that.

Welcome fellow San diegan. I your also considering a mp3 why not just go for a 05'-07 Mazda 3? It should be under 10k and with the right suspension upgrades. Handles really good. I can vouch for the sedan. Lots of cabin room for kids, hell even really tall adults. Mine has a racing beat rear swaybar and eibach sportlines. Handles like a dream and thats only $300 in suspension. The decision is ultimately up to you just giving a suggestion  2thumbs

welcome to the forums!

if i was in the market i'd offer 7.5-8k..maybe 8.25k and bring this home with me....that's what got me addicted to mazdas in the first place in mid 2002.....then they kept delaying the actual release date from sept to october..then november...dealer had a Spicy orange MSP in mid dec.

so i bought one of the first 2003 6S 5 spd...cuz my other car was falling apart lol

I love my MSP. They are reliable, you just need to be on top of maintenance and don't do anything stupid like raising the boost without supporting mods. Its just like any other car like Robb said. You will fall in love with the handling, it dosent even compare to a mazda 3 with suspension upgrades. The proteges are much lighter and much more rigid then the mazda 3's.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me  2thumbs
